One Maples Lane is the first-of-its-kind co-working space for hairdressers and colourists. The client’s brief for the old furniture factory space was ‘white everything’, a feeling of home, and a space that reflected its grafitti covered shell but that also felt luxurious. The space was transformed by layers of textural white finishes, galvanised steel (referenced from the existing and untouched door), special light pieces, and vintage furniture from around the world. A vintage Willy Rizzo coffee table with integrated ice box houses spirit bottles, the kitchenette holds a fridge and top-of-the-range coffee machine. Local makers created bespoke fixtures & fittings including an enormous concrete basin, local suppliers produced custom coloured pieces. Inspired by Ricardo Bofill’s La Fabrica, the design sought to retain the history of the space by transforming it only from eye-height down, with exception of Fabrica-style white semi-sheer curtains suspended from the ceiling, cutting through old and the new. Perfectly imperfect and unapologetically itself, the eclectism of the space is like no salon seen before.
